Uncle Bert became a first winner of the National Hunt season proper in the familiar silks of James and Jean Potter Ltd on his Handicap debut in the Go North Cab On Target Series Qualifier at Perth this afternoon under a confident ride by Sam Twiston-Davies.
A smooth success in Scotland was yet another fantastic result for Pethers Moon who stands at Yorton Stud for just £2,500 and has already sired the winners of 24 races from 15 individual horses; he is clearly a young stallion going places!
Uncle Bert is out of Azza, herself a half-sister to the high-class Vieux Lion Rouge, who won the Becher Chase over the Grand National fences for David Pipe, so we are hopeful that Bert can develop into a smart stayer.

Trained on the wonderfully durable, low maintenance and ecofriendly gallop surface, Canter Carpet, by Nigel Twiston-Davies in the Cotswolds; the Handicapper is undoubtedly going to have his say after today’s victory but, as we have learnt quite quickly with the offspring of Pethers Moon, they all tend to improve with time, and we suspect that is the case where Uncle Bert is concerned.
With Chepstow’s (official) Jumps Season Opener taking place on 13th & 14th October, the National Hunt season is starting to swing into action where the likes of Stolen Silver could make his return to action for Potter Group in the Native River Handicap Chase while Range could possibly make his hurdles debut at the same fixture.
